The need for blood remains strong and WestJet Cargo is keeping a domestic lifeline open for Canadians that need it by continuing to fly blood and blood products across the country for Canadian Blood Services.
Blood products and samples for testing are critical to Canadians who require blood for cancer treatments, trauma and surgeries.
Each day, as one of Canadian Blood Services cargo carriers, WestJet Cargo transports approximately 300 kilograms of blood products to destinations across the country including; Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Ottawa, Regina, St. John’s, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver.
Before departure, Canadian Blood Services products are carefully loaded into the holds of our aircraft in validated and insulated shipping containers. Upon arrival they are accepted and safely delivered through a third-party to healthcare facilities and labs across the country.
“Canadians from coast-to-coast are depending on us and our domestic network to keep critical lifelines open for the movement of essential products like blood,” said Charles Duncan, WestJet Executive Vice-President Strategy and Cargo. “Working alongside the Canadian Blood Services we are able ensure that Canadians who require these essential products remain able to access them during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
As the COVID-19 crisis worsens and Canada’s supply lines are impacted by the closing of borders and less flying, WestJet Cargo has been working closely with clients like Canadian Blood Services to ensure support in the face of global and domestic capacity reductions.
“Canadian Blood Services relies on many types of carriers to move product both on the ground and in the air. Air transportation enables CBS to move blood and blood products long distances around the country as required every day to ensure required testing is completed and that final products can be delivered to hospitals across the country” Peter Saunders, Canadian Blood Services, Associate Director, Logistics Planning.
As a cargo partner for close to 15 years, WestJetters also play an active role in supporting Canadian Blood Services. Last year, nearly 500 WestJetters were members of Canadian Blood Services Partners for Life program and made close to 300 donations of blood.
Due to COVID-19, the need for donations remains strong and the demand for blood will be constant in the weeks and months ahead. WestJet is encouraging Canadians to consider booking an appointment to donate blood whenever possible to ensure we can help Canadian Blood Services maintain a healthy national blood supply during this difficult time.
