Sustainability at WestJet

At WestJet, we’re committed to growing responsibly and ensuring that we are an environmentally sustainable airline. We’re making great efforts to minimize our environmental footprint, so in honour of Earth Day we wanted to share with you some of the environmental initiatives currently taking place in our world.

We’re sending less waste to our landfills

In 2018, the WestJet campus in Calgary established an organics recovery program to ensure compostable material is diverted away from our landfills. We set up organic recycling bins on every floor and the program has been in successful operation with the help of campus employees and visitors. Last year across our Canadian network, we diverted 329 metric tonnes of organics and recyclable material away from landfills, that’s roughly the same weight as two Dreamliners!

We’re taking the first steps to phase out plastics onboard

WestJet Catering is committed to improving the sustainability of our onboard products while still maintaining quality and food safety. That’s why we’re pleased to announce that in March 2019, we began to phase out plastic stir-sticks onboard our fleet, with an objective to eliminate single-use plastics from onboard catering by 2023. We are excited to share more information around this initiative soon!

From all of us at WestJet, happy Earth Day!
