How’s this for a headline: “Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck get married in Turks and Caicos.”? It’s true. Ben Affleck married Jennifer Garner, while Bruce Willis wed Emma Heming. The ceremonies happened four years apart, but the headline does illustrate that Turks and Caicos has long been a hot wedding destination for celebrities and regular folks alike. Also that I could probably write for a tabloid if I had to. Thankfully, I don’t have to, and this week I’m writing about Caribbean destination weddings and honeymoons. A wise man once said “Marriage is a journey. A wedding is a destination.” And I totally agree. Mostly because it was me who said it, just now. But also because you don’t have to be a celebrity to recognize that our Caribbean wedding destinations can make that most special day into something truly legendary.
A destination wedding is a bit like your wedding song. It should be meaningful, and a reflection of the bride and groom’s personalities. But while some of your guests may take exception to “Uptown Funk”, we have a hard time imagining anyone who wouldn’t want to be on the guest list in these sweet Caribbean locales.
As we mentioned above, Turks and Caicos was good enough for Ben and Bruce. The resorts here take pride in playing the perfect host for weddings. And with an amazing selection of blissful tropical settings, Turks and Caicos assures you of a wedding or honeymoon unlike any other. From small intimate occasions, to large extended family celebrations, Turks and Caicos has it all, and may well have invented the whole concept of “happily ever after”.
St. Lucia is an extremely popular choice for destination weddings and honeymoons. For starters, it’s simply one of the most romantic places on earth – with amazing beaches, and exotic tropical goodness everywhere you look. In St. Lucia they know what a good thing they’ve got, and so a destination wedding industry has grown and is waiting to help make sure your every wish comes true on your special day. Many resorts here offer special deals for wedding parties and honeymoons. Whatever you’re dreaming of, you can make it happen on St. Lucia, from barefoot-in-the-sand just-the-two-of-us to spare-no-expense luxury.
Aruba. The very sound of the word is romantic, conjuring up images of secluded beaches, blissful days and tropical drinks at sunset. Sure, you could serve reception cocktails in coconut shells at your wedding in say, Edmonton. It comes across as a bit more authentic when you do it in Aruba. Aruba has long been a favourite spot for honeymooners and destination weddings. The scenery can best be described as postcard-perfect, the people are unfailingly good-natured and hospitable, and the weather is seemingly locked on “best day ever” just about every day – why not select “One Happy Island” as the setting for the happiest day of your life?
Yes, we know: Bermuda is not technically in the Caribbean. It is, however, one of the friendliest destinations you’ll ever visit. Bermuda offers a wealth of choice when it comes to finding the perfect spot for your wedding – including a few spots that we’re pretty sure you haven’t considered. Yes, you can have your wedding on one of Bermuda’s amazing pink sand beaches, or just offshore aboard a luxury yacht, and it will be awesome. Epic, even. But you can also select one of the island’s historic forts as the backdrop for your perfect day. And even if a church wedding isn’t quite your style, the Unfinished Church at St. Georges provides a memorable and unique setting, in a UNESCO World Heritage site.
So many choices, and so many possibilities. To help you get hitched without a hitch, so to speak – WestJet & WestJet Vacations has introduced WestJet Groups. With WestJet Groups, you’re assisted by one dedicated wedding specialist who is committed to making sure your day is the best day possible, from the airport to the altar and beyond.
Finally, a word about paperwork. Marriage is a serious proposition – as your Dad already told you – and getting married in the Caribbean can require a little bit more attention to paperwork and documentation. When selecting your preferred destination, it’s a good idea to look into the local laws governing marriage, so you can find out exactly what’s required before you can get a marriage license issued. With all your paperwork and preparation taken care of, your next stop will be paradise: you and your favourite person, with all your favourite people – in your new favourite place.
