How to do a different day (or two) in Vegas.

Vegas. It’s a trip, to be sure – a trip to get there, and a neon and laser-lit trip in all shapes and sizes once you get there. There are definitely some things that only happen here, and if you’re a first-timer there are must-sees around every corner. It is, after all, the Entertainment Capital of the World. And there are the typical reasons to go to Vegas: the glitz and glamour of the resorts and casinos, the shows – legends like Celine Dion, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Lopez and a jaw-dropping variety of Cirque de Soleil productions. But if you’re looking to chart a course with a few degrees of difference for a day or two in Vegas, we’ve got a six-pack of options that are a bit off the beaten path, while still being very Vegas.

How often do you find an incredible weekend where you and some friends can have a blast – and a chance at a first prize of $50,000 (USD)? Oh yeah, we’re talking about The World Series of Beer Pong. Put your ball cap on backwards, cut the sleeves off some t-shirts, and get ready to scream “whooooo!” ‘til your voice is gone. Yes, the World Series of Beer Pong is that kind of party, and it’s been happening in Vegas for the last six years. The World Series of Beer Pong takes place July 6-10, 2016.

Saying Tough Mudder is a race is like saying a Kardashian enjoys having their picture taken. Yes, Tough Mudder is a race – but there’s so much more to it. First, there’s mud, and lots of it; then there’s an array of obstacles ranging from difficult to downright evil. Known as the World’s Toughest Mudder, Tough Mudder Las Vegas features classic obstacles and some new challenges for 2016. For participating teams, it’s an opportunity to prove how tough you are; for spectators, it’s a chance to see how crazy – and tough – the participants are. For everyone involved, it’s an unforgettable weekend of mud-soaked fun. Tough Mudder Las Vegas Presented by Merrell takes place October 29 & 30, 2016.

Looking for a more traditional race? Try Running with the Devil. This two-day running festival offers something for everyone. You can run a marathon, a half-marathon, a 10K, a 5K – or you can enjoy some shade and a cold drink (you’ll have to bring both your own shade and drinks as a spectator) and just watch as runners go for glory in the blazing heat of the Mojave desert. Running with the Devil takes place June 25 & 26, 2016.

Got a thing for superheroes and sci-fi celebrities? How about super toys? SuperToyCon is the place to be for “comics, cars and culture”, August 5th through 7th. Everything from Power Rangers (yes, the original Power Rangers will be in the house) to TV celebrities to Hot Wheels collectibles and of course legends from the worlds of TV, pro wrestling and comic books. And toys? You bet: Mattel, Hasbro, Lego, Nerf and other industry giants all have major presences all weekend.  SuperToyCon runs August 5-7, 2016.
