Today WestJet announced that we plan to add the Boeing 737 MAX to our fleet, starting in 2017.

We are excited about the increased level of fuel efficiency the 737 MAX will bring to our fleet. We’re equally thrilled about the on-board atmosphere the aircraft will provide for our guests in the future, as well as the network flexibility we will get from this aircraft order.

The 737 MAX is equipped with LEAP-1B engines and new split-scimitar winglets, which is expected to deliver approximately 13 per cent more fuel efficient than our current Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft. The 737 MAX is also quieter than the 737 NG, and features the new Boeing Sky Interior, which includes larger window reveals, sculpted ceilings, customized LED lighting, and more room for carry-on baggage. Below are some artist renderings of the 737 MAX 7 and 8 series in WestJet livery. While these images may not be exactly what our 737 MAX aircraft will look like upon delivery, they should give you a good idea of what they will look like.

    Flying a little low isn’t she over the rockies ? and will seats cost less with this new fuel saving plane ? I sure hope it will be less costly to the consumer

    Hi Trudy, adding the 737 to our fleet is exactly the kind of innovation that will allow us to continue to keep our fares low in the future. The graphics that are included in this post aren’t actually real. The 737 MAX doesn’t exist yet, so we rely on these artist renderings to get an idea of what our planes could look like in the future. Of course, we’d never fly a commercial flight this close to the mountains!

    I just flew on one of your new airlines this week, the seats seemed smaller, is this true? Also no TVs, but tablets loaded with movies – but not free, a $10 rental.

    Hi Andrea, we have a couple different models of seats on our 737s, but they are all the same width (18.5″). Depending on where you sit on the aircraft, you may have more or less legroom from one row to the next. There may be a difference in seat pitch of up to 2″ in our regular seats, which range from 31-33″ on our 600, 700, and 800-series aircraft. Seats in Plus have extra legroom on all our aircraft. While we finalize plans for our future inflight entertainment system, a handful of our newest 737 deliveries will not have TVs installed on them. We do have a selection of tablets (pre-loaded with movies, etc.) to rent on these aircraft in case someone doesn’t have their own entertainment with them.

    We haven’t determined what the seat configuration will be for the 737 MAX aircraft yet. That’ll likely happen in a few years, as we get closer to the delivery date.

    Beautiful Plane. I remember first time I ever flew was back in 1979 and it was on a 100 series Boeing 737. WOW, what a difference. Hopefully, one day I will be able to grant my teenage daughters wish and fly on a Boeing 737 again.

    This seems like a great addition to the WestJet fleet. How many 737 MAX are going to be added and what routes will they be flying on? I guess 2017 is still plenty of time away to make all these decisions.

    I have recently been to the Boeing factory in Washington and actually got to take a look at how some of the Boeing aircraft are built. It was quite impressive.
