It’s hard to believe that one year ago today a group of excited WestJetters stood in a crowded boarding lounge in Calgary awaiting the departure of the inaugural WestJet Encore flight. The maiden voyage was between Calgary and Nanaimo and was followed that same day with connections to Fort St. John, Vancouver, Victoria and Saskatoon. Our humble beginnings started with two aircraft (which we affectionately refer to as the twins, i.e. tails 401 and 402), six destinations and 10 daily departures.
One year later, WestJet Encore has come a long way, thanks to the loyal support of our guests and the hard work of many dedicated WestJetters. We now have thirteen Q400 NextGen aircraft in our fleet, and operate 90 WestJet Encore flights per day. We’ve welcomed close to one million guests on board our Q400s and have increased our WestJet encore team from 131 people at launch, to almost five hundred today.
This Friday, June 27, the first scheduled WestJet Encore flight will land in Ontario, marking the first step of our Eastern “Encore” expansion. It makes me think of this photo we originally Tweeted on June 5, 2013.

In addition to adding increased frequency on existing routes (Toronto to Thunder Bay and Thunder Bay to Winnipeg, to start) we plan on adding new Eastern destinations to our route map, and continuing to bring competitive fares to more Canadians than ever before. We are excited about WestJet Encore’s future, and thank you, our guests, for helping us make the first year such a success.
